Legal document formats explained in plain English
Each page in this library explains one of the legal document formats Indian citizens and small businesses use most: what it is, when you need it, whether it needs stamp paper, notarisation or registration, and the mistakes that make it invalid.

How to choose between legal document formats
- Notices and letters: legal notices, cheque bounce notices, replies and RTI applications go on plain paper and need proof of sending.
- Affidavits: name change, address proof and indemnity bonds are signed before a notary on stamp paper.
- Property documents: rent agreements, gift deeds and relinquishment deeds may need stamp duty and registration.
- Business agreements: partnership deeds and NDAs are contracts that should be stamped as per your state.
Stamp duty and registration for legal document formats
Stamp duty is set by each state, so the same document can cost different amounts in different states. Registration under the Registration Act, 1908 is compulsory for some documents, such as gift deeds and leases of more than one year. Check your state’s stamp and registration portal before you buy stamp paper, or buy an e-stamp through the SHCIL e-stamping portal where available.
CIVL formats are general templates, not legal advice. If you are unsure which of these legal document formats you need, Ask CIVL.
Every one of our legal document formats is written for Indian law and follows the same structure, so you always know where to look.

What each of our legal document formats includes
Each format page starts with a quick answer, explains what the document is and when you need it, and sets out a table of stamp duty, notarisation, registration and witness requirements. It then lists what the document must contain, gives numbered steps to make it valid, flags common mistakes, and answers the questions people search for most. Official sources are linked at the end of every page.
The ready-to-use version of each format comes as an editable Word file and a print-ready PDF, with notes on filling every blank and a pointer to your state’s stamp duty rate. Where a document is tied to a registration or filing, we also explain the next step, such as GST registration or firm registration.
