An Aadhaar address update can be done online on myAadhaar or the Aadhaar app in about ten minutes, or at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra. You need a mobile number linked to your Aadhaar and a valid proof of address in your own name, or the consent of a family member if you have no such proof. This guide covers the fee, the documents that work, each step and what to do if your request is rejected.

Quick answer
Online: log in to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in (or the Aadhaar app) with OTP, choose Address Update, enter the new address, upload a proof of address in your name and pay the fee (₹75 from October 2025). Keep the 14-digit SRN to track it.
No proof in your name? Use the Head of Family option: a relative aged 18+ shares their address and approves your request by OTP.
Time: UIDAI aims to complete updates within 30 days; most online requests are done in a few days.
What is an Aadhaar address update?
Your Aadhaar holds a demographic record (name, date of birth, gender, address, mobile, email) and a biometric record (photo, fingerprints, iris). Changing the address is a demographic update. UIDAI lets you update the address as often as needed, unlike your name (twice) and date of birth or gender (once), which have lifetime limits and need stronger proof.
Banks, telecom companies, gas agencies, schools and government schemes increasingly read your address from Aadhaar through e-KYC. An old address can delay a bank account, a new SIM, a passport or a property registration. An Aadhaar address update is therefore usually the first thing to do after a move.
Address update or document update: what is the difference?
These are two separate services on myAadhaar and they are often confused:
- Address update changes the address printed on your Aadhaar. It is a paid demographic update.
- Document update only re-validates your existing identity and address by uploading fresh proofs. UIDAI asks people whose Aadhaar is ten or more years old and never updated to do this. Online document update on myAadhaar is free until 14 June 2027 (UIDAI office memorandum of 13 May 2026); centres charge for it.
Who can use the online Aadhaar address update?
- Any Aadhaar holder whose mobile number is linked to Aadhaar, because login works only by OTP. If your mobile is not linked, first visit an Aadhaar centre to link it (biometric authentication is needed).
- People with a proof of address in their own name, or a family member (Head of Family) willing to share their address.
- Residents moving within India. NRIs with Aadhaar can also use it if their Indian mobile is active.
Documents accepted for an Aadhaar address update
The proof must be in your name, show the full new address and be clear and in colour. Commonly accepted proofs of address include:
- Passport, voter ID card or ration card
- Bank or post office passbook or statement with photo, or a signed and stamped statement
- Electricity, water, gas or landline/broadband bill (generally not older than three months)
- Property tax receipt (not older than one year)
- Registered rent, lease or leave and licence agreement
- Allotment letter or registered sale deed
- Certificate of address on UIDAI’s standard format, signed by a gazetted officer, MP, MLA, Tehsildar or village head
Driving licences, mark sheets, medical cards and unregistered rent agreements are often rejected. Check the current list on the UIDAI site before you upload. If your rent agreement is the only proof, see our rent agreement registration guide, because a registered agreement is far more likely to be accepted.
Aadhaar address update step by step

- Log in. Open myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in (or the official Aadhaar app), enter your Aadhaar number and the captcha, and log in with the OTP sent to your linked mobile.
- Choose the service. Select Address Update, then Update Aadhaar online. Read the guidelines and continue.
- Enter the new address. Type it exactly as it appears on your proof: house number, street, locality, post office, district, state and PIN code. Small differences are the most common reason for rejection.
- Upload the proof. Pick the document type from the list and upload a clear colour scan or photo (PDF, JPEG or PNG within the size limit shown on the page).
- Pay the fee. Pay ₹75 by UPI, card or net banking. The fee is non-refundable even if the request is rejected.
- Save the SRN. Note the 14-digit Service Request Number and download the acknowledgement.
- Track and download. Check status with the SRN under Check Enrolment & Update Status. Once updated, download the new e-Aadhaar; it is valid everywhere. Order a PVC card only if you want one.
Aadhaar address update fees and timelines

UIDAI revised its charges from 1 October 2025 (demographic update ₹50 → ₹75, biometric ₹100 → ₹125) and has notified a further revision from October 2028. Always check the fee displayed before you pay.
Aadhaar address update through the Head of Family
If you have no proof of address in your own name, for example a spouse after marriage or a student living with parents, choose Head of Family based Address Update. Any Aadhaar holder aged 18 or above can be the Head of Family (HoF).
- Enter the HoF’s Aadhaar number and choose your relationship.
- Upload a proof of relationship that names both of you, such as a ration card, marriage certificate, passport or birth certificate. If you have none, a self-declaration by the HoF on the UIDAI format is accepted.
- Pay the fee and note the SRN.
- The HoF receives an SMS and must log in to myAadhaar and approve the request with OTP within the time allowed. If the HoF rejects it or does not respond, the request is closed and the fee is not refunded.
Updating the address at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra
Go to a centre if your mobile is not linked, if you also need a biometric or mobile update, or if online requests keep failing. Book an appointment on the UIDAI site or walk in, fill the update form, show the original proof, give your fingerprint or iris and pay the fee. You get an acknowledgement slip with an Update Request Number (URN). Centres must not charge more than the UIDAI fee; ask for a printed receipt.
Aadhaar address update for tenants
Tenants often lack a utility bill in their own name. The options that usually work for an Aadhaar address update are:
- A registered rent or lease agreement showing your name and the full address.
- A bank passbook or account statement updated with the new address (many banks accept a rent agreement to change it first).
- The Head of Family route, if a family member already has the new address on Aadhaar.
- A certificate of address from a gazetted officer or the local body, on the format accepted by UIDAI, if nothing else is available.
A rent agreement made only on plain paper or one without your name is usually rejected. If your landlord will not register the agreement, update your bank address first and use the bank statement.
Keep your new address consistent everywhere
After the Aadhaar address update, update the same address in your other records so they match:
- Bank accounts: most banks can update the address through Aadhaar e-KYC.
- Voter ID: apply on Form 8 on the voters’ service portal for a shift of residence.
- Passport: the new address is printed only when the passport is re-issued; you do not need to re-issue just for an address change.
- Gas, insurance and investments: update them with a copy of the updated Aadhaar.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Typing an address that does not match the proof, or adding landmarks that are not on the document.
- Uploading a black-and-white, cropped or blurred image.
- Using a proof in someone else’s name without choosing the Head of Family route.
- Using an unregistered rent agreement or an old utility bill.
- Paying an agent or a fake website. The only official sites are uidai.gov.in and myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
- Filing a second request while the first is still in progress; wait for the first to finish.
After your Aadhaar address update
Download the new e-Aadhaar and share it wherever your address matters: bank, insurer, employer, gas agency and mobile operator. If you are applying for a passport soon, wait until the Aadhaar address update is complete so that your documents match. For other address papers, an address proof affidavit can help where an office accepts one.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an Aadhaar address update take?
UIDAI aims to finish within 30 days. Most online requests with a clear proof are approved within a few working days. Track the status with your SRN.
Is the Aadhaar address update free?
No. An address update costs ₹75. Only the document update (re-validating your existing proofs) is free online on myAadhaar until 14 June 2027.
Can I do an Aadhaar address update without a linked mobile number?
Not online. Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra; you can update the address and link your mobile in the same visit.
How many times can I change my address in Aadhaar?
There is no fixed limit on address changes, unlike name and date of birth. Each update is charged separately.
My request was rejected. What now?
Read the rejection reason in the status page, fix the proof or address mismatch and apply again. The earlier fee is not refunded. If you think the rejection is wrong, call 1947 or raise a grievance on the UIDAI site.
Can I do an Aadhaar address update with a rent agreement?
Yes, if the rent agreement is registered and shows your name and full address. Unregistered or plain-paper agreements are often rejected.
Is an Aadhaar address update compulsory after moving house?
It is not required by law, but an old address causes problems with KYC, passport police verification and deliveries of official letters. Update it soon after you move.
Can I do an Aadhaar address update on the mAadhaar app?
Yes. The myAadhaar portal and the mAadhaar app both offer online address update with OTP on your registered mobile number. Fees and document rules are the same.
Where can I get a ready-to-use address proof affidavit?
Use CIVL’s address proof affidavit format. It is useful for offices that accept an affidavit while your Aadhaar address update is pending.
